Born and brought up in Devon, Mike had a gap year at the Sorbonne in Paris and then read French and German at King’s College Cambridge. Joining the Diplomatic Service in 1967, he then lived and worked for nearly 30 years in Germany, Hungary, France and all over the Middle East.

He retired from government service in 1995, co-founded the strategic advisory firm Hakluyt in London and went on to do a further degree in Opera Studies and a PhD at Goldsmiths, London.

His interests are theatre, literature, music especially opera, and sport. And international affairs.

Mike’s talk will be: Do you want to be a diplomat? Life in the foreign service. He will talk about the qualities required for an interesting and unusual career and illustrate it with some reminiscences of his own.
